Apamea (Afamia) is situated at a crossroad between Aleppo, Latakia, and Damascus. Apamea is the name of an ancient city founded by Cilicus Nicator and named after his wife “Apamea.” Its history goes back to the prehistoric Stone Age as shown by the excavations of 1968 in the western part of its wall.
Apamea has a pattern similar to a chessboard. Apamea’s theatre is the biggest theatre in the Roman ear, and it is thought to belong to the Saluqi era. Apamea was completely destroyed by the earthquakes which struck it in 1157 and 1170. Many excavation expeditions have made many probings under the supervision of the General Administration of Archaeology and Museums.
